Modulation

Flexion comes with deep modulation possibilities for all your sound-design pleasures. Modulation sources are data streams that originate from internal signals, such as an LFO or Envelope, or external signals, such as a knob on your controller.

Modulation sources can be connected to modulation targets. In Flexion, almost every slider or dial has multiple modulation inlets. When a source is connected to an inlet, the current value of the slider or dial is modulated by the source's control signal. Generally speaking, modulation means that the source's current value is added to the targets current value.

Sources

Modulation sources can be accessed in three different places:

  1. In the Player View:

Modulation source selectors may or may not be available, as seen fit by the designer of the mini synth. If a selector is available, it may only contain a subset of all possible modulation sources - as the author of the mini synth deemed appropriate.

  2. In the Creator View:

A modulation source selector is always available at the bottom of the interface. This selector always includes the full set of all possible modulation sources.

  3. In both views, when a control shows modulation inlets:

By clicking in the area of the modulation inlets, the modulation configurator pops up. Here, all appropriate sources for the current context can be accessed for each inlet. Additionally, the modulation flow can be customized further (see Modulation Configurator).

Modulation sources can be uniquely identified by its icon's color, shape and letter.

  • Color:

The icon's color indicates the origin of the source. For example, all sources originating from external controllers have one color and all sources originating from internal modulators have a different color.

  • Shape:

The icon's shape indicates the type of the source. For example, all sources originating from the keyboard are squared and all sources that originate from modulator 1 are squared with an indented top right corner.

  • Letter:

The icon's letter indicates the sub-type of the source. For example, the keyboard's velocity source shows a "V" and the steps source of modulator 1 shows "S".

If you hover the mouse over a modulation source icon, you will see lines going from the source to its currently connected targets.

Connecting to Targets

Modulation targets are slider and dials that include modulation inlets. In order to connect a source to a target, simply drag the source-icon to a modulation inlet of the target. Once an inlet is connected to a source, the source's icon will appear at the inlet. Dragging the source-icon of a connected inlet allows to set the strength of the modulation. The currently set strength will be indicated at the modulation lines of the target, where a thicker line is drawn in the color of the connected source.

If multiple inlets of a single target are connected to sources, all influences will be added together by default. In order to remove the connection, right click on the connected inlet and select "Remove Modulation".

Alternatively, sources can also be connected, removed and configured with additional features via the Modulation Configurator.
